Learning Environment for Every Child

At Brainiac Club, we don’t think children fit neatly into boxes... or comfortably into long hours at a desk. 

Some children can sit for 30 minutes and concentrate on something they find boring. Others need to move, talk, experiment or find something genuinely interesting or challenging before their brains switch on. One thing is certain… there is no single teaching method that works optimally for all students. Because – newsflash – all kids are different!

So why do we disempower teachers? And emphasize so much quiet time and desk work?

Why do we assume there is something wrong with a child who struggles to stay focused or engage with boring homework? Are they badly behaved? Do they have ADHD? Or could the way we're asking them to learn sometimes be part of the problem?

Even the brightest children don't come with identical attention spans, motivations or ways of processing information. We shouldn't expect one way of teaching to work equally well for all of them.

That’s where Brainiac Club comes in.

We’re interested in how can we make learning more engaging for different kids with different brains. We believe children learn better when they are curious, challenged, active and involved. We create learning tools that turn practice into something children actually want to do. Because if we can make learning more motivating, more interactive and more rewarding, we may remove some of the unnecessary friction between a child and the thing we’re asking them to learn.

That matters for every child — whether they have an ADHD diagnosis, sit somewhere in the middle of the attention spectrum, or simply haven’t yet found the way of learning that works for them.

Different brains. Different strengths. Better ways to learn.

If you suspect your child has ADHD

Understanding the spectrum of attention regulation and why the learning environment matters. 

Some children are naturally brilliant at resisting distractions. Others are pulled towards every interesting thing happening around them. Most of us are somewhere in between.

Experts are beginning to talk about attention regulation as a spectrum. Children differ in their ability to:​

  • resist distractions

  • control impulses

  • get started on something they don’t find interesting

  • switch between activities

  • remember instructions

  • regulate their motivation

  • manage frustration and boredom

 

These differences exist across the whole population and ADHD sits towards the most challenging end of this distribution. The important distinction is that ADHD isn’t simply about being often distracted or energetic. It is diagnosed when difficulties persistently cause significant impairment across several different areas of life.

Research strongly supports a genetic contribution to ADHD and attention regulation. Some children inherit neurological and genetic characteristics that make attention and impulse regulation harder for them. This doesn’t mean there is a magical biological line separating a child with ADHD. However trained clinicians are experts at understanding the threshold upon which below-average attention regulation manifests as a disorder that would benefit from treatment. 

But that is not the end of the story.

Nature matters. But so does nurture: The environment matters too.

A child’s ability to regulate attention is being exercised inside a particular world. Think about the demands we place on children today:

 

Sit still.
Listen.
Wait.
Don’t interrupt.
Ignore distractions.
Move on when the bell rings.
Concentrate on something you don’t particularly enjoy.
Remember what you were told five minutes ago.
Do it again tomorrow.

For some children, those demands are relatively easy. For others across the spectrum, they are much more difficult.

Sleep, physical activity, stress, stimulation, screen use, classroom structure, the amount of movement children get, the type of work they are asked to do and how rewarding that work feels can all affect how well a child functions.

Even without a formal diagnosis of ADHD, a child with a particular neurological make-up might struggle more in one environment and thrive in another. Instead we could ask: “What does this child need in order to learn at their best?”

For a small percentage of children, medication might be genuinely helpful. For many others, addressing the learning environment could produce significantly better outcomes.
